If you feel sad, empty, exhausted, or “not like yourself” most days, you may be wondering if you have depression.
Depression is more than a bad day. It can affect how you feel, think, sleep, eat, work, and manage daily life.
Common Signs of Depression
Major depression involves a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure that lasts most of the time for at least two weeks, along with other symptoms.
Signs may include:
- Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Feeling tired or having little energy
- Eating much more or less than usual
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feeling worthless or overly guilty
- Moving or speaking more slowly
- Feeling restless
- Thinking about death or suicide
You do not need to have every symptom.
If these symptoms have lasted two weeks or longer and are making daily life harder, it is important to talk with a healthcare or mental health professional.
Depression Is Common — and Treatable
About 1 in 12 U.S. adults experienced a major depressive episode in 2021.
Depression can be treated. Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication, or other treatments depending on your symptoms and medical history. For some patients, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may also be an option.
How Do I Know for Sure?
A symptom list cannot diagnose depression.
A qualified healthcare or mental health professional can evaluate your symptoms, rule out other possible causes, and help you decide what treatment may be right for you.
You do not have to wait until depression becomes severe to ask for help.
